Carson Softball/Baseball Preview

Softball

Head Coach: Scott Vickrey, 16th Season as Varsity HC at Carson

Last season’s record: 8-25 Overall, 3-13 League. Eighth in Northern 5A.

Key Losses: Corine Doran, and Ashleigh Naranjo.

Overview: Carson has always been a steady softball program under Coach Vickery and after last year’s less than stellar record the girls of the capital city are ready once again to prove that they are a top tier team in Northern Nevada. I like their chances and they return some important pieces to make a run this season. Their biggest rivals, the Douglas Tigers, are the reigning and defending State Champions so they don’t have to look far to see what the standard is in Northern Nevada at the beginning of the season. The Senators are one of my sleeper teams to have success this coming season.

What can we expect from your team this season?

Offense – Looking forward to adding a bit more speed to the offense. The Senators should be able to produce runs throughout the lineup.

Defense – [We] have several players that can excel at multiple positions. This flexibility gives depth to a roster that is only 14 players deep.

Pitching – Bella Reyes will return as the anchor for a group of young pitchers that show promise. Reyes will have support from Laila Campbell, Madison Blanchard-Salazar, as well as Riley Kuhlman.

Returning starters for the 2024 season – 5.

What is the key to growing/maintaining your program? N/A.

What is different or special about your team this season in comparison to years past? This year’s squad only has two seniors. So, youth is the word that represents the 2024 Senators with four freshmen on the roster.

Players to watch this season:

Junior Kiele Franco, 1B – Should have a big year in the field and at the plate.

Sophomore Jasmine Slater, CF – Cornerstone for the outfield and brings both the ability to slap hit and use her power from the left side of the plate.

Freshman Jordan Brubaker, SS – Great range, quick feet, and a cannon for an arm.

Sophomore Cali Stagliano, Utility

Senior Isabella Reyes, P

Baseball

Head Coach: Bryan Manoukian, 12th Season as Varsity HC at Carson

Last season’s record: 4-28 Overall, 2-14 League.

Key Losses: Cooper Eaton, and DeCarlo Quintana.

Overview: A season ago the Senators finished in last place in the Northern 5A and were forced to go on the road to play Reed in a play-in game to see who got the final playoff spot. Unfortunately for Carson, Reed won that game 8-6 and ended the Senators season, while going on to a third-place finish during the playoffs. The Senators have turned the page on last season and will look forward to competing in a more “wide open” league this season. They like their chances and if a couple bounces go their way this season they’ll most likely end the season with a chance at hosting a home playoff game for the first time in a number of years. Can they stir up the ghosts of past Senators baseball? This is, after all, The Carson Crusher’s territory. Only time will tell if they are ready for the moment.

What can we expect from your team this season?

[Overall] We are going to get better as the year goes on. Many of our guys have minimal varsity experience and as they gain that experience, we will improve.

Offense – We need to cut down on strikeouts.

Defense – We need to make routine plays consistently.

Pitching – We cannot walk people.

Returning starters for the 2024 season – 5 Position Players, 5 Pitchers.

What is the key to growing/maintaining your program? Determination.

What is different or special about your team this season in comparison to years past? This group has put in a ton of time in the offseason dedicated to being more mentally tough. They have done the work and hopefully that will make us more competitive.
