DAMONTE'S DYNAMIC DUO: DODSON & MACIAS

Writer's picture: LynnOAult LynnOAult

Who is your favorite dynamic duo? Batman and Robin, Mario and Luigi, Woody and Buzz all come to mind, but what about in sports? In sports, there have been big threes and super teams, but when it comes to dynamic duos, it is hard to beat Shaq and Kobe, and Jordan and Pippen. Here in Northern Nevada, we have a dynamic duo who are leading the Damonte Ranch Mustangs boys' varsity team this year: Dodson and Macias.

Drew Dodson and Jeriah Mecias are both seniors and played varsity last year with Jiro Basabas and Jace Anderson. They helped the Mustangs win their first league title, a state playoff game, and pushed the state 4A boys' title game deep into the fourth quarter against Sierra Vista. Basabas was a blur who could make difficult layups while also being a deadly three-point shooter. Anderson was the 4A Northern player of the year, an athletic 6’7” post who is now playing for Southern Oregon. This season, it is Dodson and Mecias setting the pace for the Mustangs.

Dodson is leading the 4A North in scoring with 20.8 points per game. His high game of the year was 30, on December 20th, against Reed. His season low was on January 24th; he was sick and still finished with 14 points. Dodson does more than score for Damonte; he has three double-doubles this season and is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. This season, Damonte has a lot of guys who are under 6’; Dodson stands 6’3” and is often the man in the middle for the Mustangs on both offense and defense, but you often see him running the floor like a guard, handling the ball and looking for an opportunity to throw down a dunk.

Macias is the second leading scorer in the 4A North this season, with 18.1 points per game. It would appear that Macias has the green light from head coach Dillon Voyles to shoot the three whenever he feels like he has the shot. But he isn’t just a shooter; he often breaks his defender down, getting into the lane and collapsing the defense. Macias also averages 3.6 assists per game along with 3.8 rebounds and 2 steals. Macias’ best offensive night of the season was in December when Damonte hosted Reed. Macias scored 31 points, pulled down 6 rebounds, and had 3 assists and 3 steals.

Macias and Dodson play well together and have proven to be a dynamic duo for the Mustangs. Last season, the Mustangs won the league title and compiled a 26-5 record. This season, they are 12-10 overall, 9-5 in league; however, two of those losses are vacated wins due to the use of an ineligible player. Damonte finds themselves in a tightly contested race for the second seed in the 4A North with Bishop Manogue and Reno. Spanish Springs has secured the league title and the number one seed for the playoffs. This week’s action will determine the rest of the seeds. Damonte has a tough Tuesday night matchup with the Douglas Tigers and then a Friday night south Reno showdown with Galena. Bishop Manogue has a Tuesday night game with Carson; if they win, they’ll finish league play 11-5. If Damonte wins their final two, they also finish 11-5 but will have the tiebreaker by virtue of the two league wins over Bishop Manogue. Reno has to beat McQueen Friday night and hope that Carson beats Manogue and that Damonte drops two games this week, which would create a three-way tie for that second slot. However, Damonte has two wins over the Huskies this season, which would secure them that second seed.

No matter who your team is, get out to a high school gym this week and watch the final regular season games before the playoffs start on Monday, February 10th, with the 8th and 9th seeds squaring off. The quarterfinal games will be on Tuesday, February 11th, semifinal games on Thursday, February 13th, and then the Northern 4A title game on Saturday, February 15th, at 5:00 PM, at Spanish Springs High School (regional location).
