Raging Rhinos, Ugly Eagles, Crusaders, and someone gets their first win of the season-5A North Football, Week Three

We are entering the third week of the 2024 season and the more things change, the more they stay same. Let’s see what the 5A North has done so far, as well as who they are facing this week.

5A II

BISHOP MANOGUE – the Miners started the season with a short trip to Damonte Ranch where they spoiled the home opener for the Mustangs, 48-14. Last week they defeated St. Mary’s, from Stockton, 21-14. Next up for the Miners, Rocklin. Rocklin are ranked 26th in California and are a very good NorCal program. The game is at Rocklin and will challenge the Miners. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM and Rocklin High School is a great venue; if you are going, do some shopping and enjoy all the Roseville area has to offer.

REED – the Raiders are 2-0 after notching an impressive victory, at home, over Del Oro. Last year, Del Oro beat Reed 55-9, so the 28-14 win flips the script from last year. The Raiders opened the season with a 38-7 win over Churchill County. Next up for Reed is Twelve Bridges from Lincoln, California. They have one of the better mascots I have encountered, the Raging Rhinos! Mascots aside, they are a good program, ranked 135th in California, they went 12-1 last season, won their league, and lost their CIF Division championship game by a single point. This will be a stern test for the Raiders, 7:00 PM kickoff in Sparks.

RENO – the Huskies are 1-0 after beating Palo Verde, from Vegas, 32-18 last week. Palo Verde has a rich football history and are always a tough foe. Next up for the Huskies, a road trip to take on Foothill, California not Vegas. It’ll be the first game for the Foothill Cougars. Last year Foothill went 6-6 and are ranked 286th in California; 7:00 PM kickoff in Oakdale for this one.

DOUGLAS – the Tigers go into week three 1-1 after losing a tough contest out in Elko and picking up the last second win, week one, at Fernley. This week the Tigers host Spring Creek, 0-2, who have lost to Galena and Carson. It is a 7:00 PM kickoff at one of the better high school venues here in Northern Nevada, Douglas High School.

McQUEEN – the Lancers are 1-1 after beating Hug and losing to Union Mine (CA). This week the Lancers face the Foothill Mustangs from Sacramento. Foothill is 1-0 and ranked 743rd in California. It is a 7:30 PM kickoff at McQueen.

SPANISH SPRINGS – the Cougars enter week three 0-2, after losses to Simi Valley (CA) and Shadow Ridge (Las Vegas). This week’s foe also has an impressive mascot, the Ugly Eagles of Clayton Valley, Charter School. The Ugly Eagles went 5-6 last season but are ranked 90th in California. The Cougars make the trip the trip to the East Bay, hoping to ruin the home opener for the Ugly Eagles. If you are making the trip, it is a 7:00 PM kickoff in Concord.

5A III

GALENA – the Grizz enter week three 2-0 after wins over Spring Creek and Chavez (CA). This week the Grizz travel to take on the Oakdale Mustangs. Oakdale (CA) are ranked 186th in California and are 0-1. Last season Oakdale went 8-4 and should be more of a challenge for the Grizzlies than their first two foes this season. It is a 7:00 PM kickoff in Oakdale.

CARSON – after beating Canyon Springs (Las Vegas) and Spring Creek, the Senators open the season 2-0, the last time they started a season 2-0 was 2012. This week is a serious step up in competition for the Senators as they face the Highland Rams, in Pocatello, Idaho. Highland is ranked third in Idaho and are 1-0 after defeating Legacy (Las Vegas) last week. Last season Highland went 11-1 and won their 12th state title. This game is Saturday, 1:30 PM, in Pocatello.

NORTH VALLEYS – are 1-1 and after shutting out Sparks and being shut out by Churchill County. This week the Panthers host Lowry, who are 0-1. It is a 7:00 PM kickoff at North Valleys this Friday night.

WOOSTER – the Colts are 1-1, after a thrilling victory over Sparks and losing week one to Pershing County. This week the Colts make the trip to Fernley, who beat Wooster last year 23-20. Fernley are 0-2 after losses to Douglas and Bishop Union (CA). The kickoff, in Fernley, is set for 7:00 PM.

DAMONTE RANCH – the Mustangs enter week three 0-2 after losing to defending state champions Bishop Manogue (5A II) and Truckee (3A). Things don’t get any easier for the Mustangs as they travel down to Las Vegas this week to take on the Faith Lutheran Crusaders. Faith are ranked 5th in Nevada and are 2-0. It’s a 7:00 PM kickoff, in Vegas, for this one.

HUG – the Hawks are 0-2 after losses to McQueen and El Capitan (CA). This week the Hawks face a familiar foe, the Sparks Railroaders. Sparks are also 0-2, so someone finishes the game with a win this week and sends the other side to 0-3. That’s a 6:00 PM kickoff at Hug this Friday.
