Good morning loyal readers of Battle Born Preps and welcome to my first foray into what I am calling "Doc's Monday Morning Football Round-up."
In this article I will highlight a few observations from the week that was in High School, College and Professional Football.
This article is intended to be informative and enjoyable to read. Also, of note I will provide commentary on some of the items that I highlight.
Without further ado, here we go...
DOMINATION! Can they be stopped?!?
The Truckee Wolverines traveled to Elko this past Friday evening and extended their winning streak to 30 games, dating back to September 2022, in dominating fashion rolling the Indians 31-8 in a game that was never really that close due to the Indians committing five turnovers. The Wolverines continue to win even though they have been hampered by injuries the last few weeks - including reigning State 3A MVP Joe Birnbaum, Sophomore LB and tackling machine Rylan Lauter and all league offensive weapon Jackson Wicks.
Basketball on Grass
126 points. That was the total number of points scored between the Fernley Vaqueros and Lowry Buckaroos last Friday night in Winnemucca, Nev. The two teams combined for 18 touchdowns (17 rushing and one passing) as Fernley went home with a 79-47 victory placing them in a good position to host a home playoff game during the first weekend of the regional tournament. More on this game in the next two bullets.
What's Love got to do with it? A night to remember...
In the aforementioned Fernley at Lowry game Junior RB Keeshawn Love carried the ball 35 times for 526 yards and seven touchdowns as Fernley totaled 48 carries for 727 rushing yards and 11 Touchdowns. In fact, Fernley's QB Bryce Stephens didn't throw a single pass the entire game instead rushing for 143 yards and three touchdowns on only seven carries. Lowry's dual-threat QB Erick Valencia got into the mix as well and he also had himself a night to remember as 'Numero Uno' totaled 102 passing yards, 222 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns against the Vaqueros.
Love’s Broken (Hearts and) Records
During his monster game Keeshawn Love established a new NIAA Class 3A Single Game Record for Rushing Yards, with 526, eclipsing Tim Maloy’s record of 373 Rushing Yards by over 150 yards. Maloy’s record was set in 1974 when he played for Reno High and the feat was achieved against Mineral County that Fall, a record that lasted for five decades before Love took the top spot last Friday night. During that game Love also tied the record for most rushing touchdowns (7) in a game in NIAA Class 3A history on Friday. The previous (solo) record holder was Myloe Lewis who played for Cheyenne in 2012 when he established the class record in a game against Western. Also of note, Love had touchdown runs of 47, 53, 63 and 90 yards this past Friday.
Turning the corner
With Nevada's win over Oregon State on Saturday night one must ask the question, “Has Nevada turned the corner?” After three losses by a total of twelve points in three of their first six games Saturday’s win felt like the breakthrough, we’ve all been anticipating since 'The Pack' almost defeated SMU in their season opener. During the game QB Brendon Lewis led the team in Passing, Rushing and Receiving Yards; a pretty cool stat line to achieve regardless of the level of play you achieve it at but to do it against a ‘Pac-Whoever’ team is even more special considering Lewis began his collegiate career at Colorado in the Pac-12. I also continue to be impressed by Truckee Local, WR Marcus Bellon, who impacts the game even when the offense doesn’t sling it around very much. Bellon plays hard on every play and has a grittiness to his game that can't be taught, it must be a Truckee thing.
RUN THE DAMN BALL.
When you run the ball for 8.4 yards per carry you will control the clock and give yourself a great chance at winning football games consistently and that's exactly what we saw take place at Mackay Stadium on Saturday evening. For the first time since November 2016 'The Pack' had a RB rush for four TDs in a single game when Savion Red found the end zone not one, not two, not three BUT four times on Saturday against Oregon State. Red is the real deal - he’s huge in person as well, much bigger than I anticipated, and he has a legit chance at playing in The NFL once his college career is over. Also of note, Red is currently on pace to give Nevada the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since James Butler did it in 2016 when he finished the season with 1,336 yards and 12 trips to the end zone.
How bout them Cowboys?!?
Cowboys fans look away. Call me a hater if you want but I've been quiet long enough. Honest opinion, During the fall not many things make me smile more than watching the Dallas Cowboys lose. As a lifelong San Francisco 49ers fan and someone who experienced heartbreak growing up at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys I enjoy every minute of the Cowboys when they lose. They made my Sunday unforgettable yesterday, on Jerry Jones 82nd birthday the Cowboys fell to the Detroit Lions at home by 38 points, marking the franchises fourth worst home loss in their history. After going undefeated with an unblemished 8-0 record at home last season the Cowboys have begun this season 0-3 at 'Jerry World.' During their current three game home losing streak the boys have been outscored by 66 points, or an average of 22 points per game. I hope the Cowboys keep Mike McCarthy as their head coach forever because together the team looks lost. But hey Cowboys Fans, it's y'all's year this year, right? Haha, Just playing... but hey, there's always next year, right? That's what I keep telling myself as a 49ers fan.
