2023 Damonte Ranch Mustangs Boys Basketball Season Preview

2023 Damonte Ranch Mustangs Boys Basketball Season Preview

By: J. Ray Dockter and Lynn Ault

2022 record: 12-15 overall, 7-9 league

Head coach: Brian Voyles, 7th season at Damonte Ranch

Key Losses: Jaime Corvera, Tyler Frank, Drew Vargas, Jarek Macias, and Josh Stanko.

Overview: The Mustangs come into this season with expectations higher than they've been in almost a decade. A perennial playoff participant the Mustangs are looking to take the next step this season.

With the seasoned coaching of Brian Voyles and his staff the Mustangs will look to make a run at the school's first regional championship this season.

At the helm of this team will be the one-two punch of Seniors Jiro Basabas, a wizard with the ball in his hands, and Jace Anderson, who is probably the region's most dominant big man when healthy. Not to be outdone by his fellow classmates is Jeriah Macias, who is a sneaky good shooter, and flanking him will be a trio of Juniors and a trio of Sophomores who are expected to be big contributors this season.

I am excited to see if these Mustangs can run and get themselves in the record books this season, they have all the makings of a team that I expect to be competing for a 'Top 3' finish in the regular season standings.

Without further ado, here is Coach Voyles answers to our questions we asked him last month.

What can we expect from your team this season?

Offense - Play fast, uptempo, inside-out basketball. Maintain our floor spacing with good ball movement.

Defense - We want to pick up full court, and make everything difficult on our opponents.

Style of Play - Fast, team-oriented ball with everybody contributing and excelling in their role.

What is the key to your team's success this season?

Staying healthy, playing defense first every night and bringing our "A" game against everyone we face this season.

What is the best part of coaching high school athletics?

The best thing about coaching high school athletics is building relationships with the kids that go past their growth on and off the court as young men.

Who do you feel are the team's to beat in the Northern 4A?

We believe that every game is going to be a challenege, there is no easy game on the schedule this season. We will need to compete every night to achieve our goals.

Projected Starting Five (Stats are reflective of last season): Senior Jiro Basabas (13.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 2.1 APG and 2.1 SPG), Senior Jace Anderson (14.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1 APG, and 1.1 SPG), Senior Shane Sisco , Junior Drew Dodson, and Junior Jeriah Macias.
